Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Boxmark Leather, a supplier of leather products for the automobile industry, will lay off 104 more workers by the end of April 2020. The total number of dismissed workers will, therefore, increase from 184 (company announcement from November 2019) to 288. The management explained that workers are no longer needed because the company has invested in new labour-saving machines and relocated a part of the serial production in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The restructuring, which aims at reducing the risk related to growing labour costs in Slovenia, is taking place at a time when the company is looking to expand production for the aviation industry.
