Jaguar Land Rover, a UK-based car manufacturer, has announced that it will end the night shift at its Halewood factory, putting 500 jobs at risk of redundancy. The cuts will come into effect on 20 April 2020.
A spokesperson for the company said that the cuts aimed to improve the efficiency of production with the plant adopting a new shift pattern based on two shifts, rather than three, as agreed with the trade unions. The announcement also included that the company will offer a voluntary redundancy programme to workers affected by the restructuring. A representative of the trade union Unite commented that the news disappointing to their members at the factory and the UK car industry.
