Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The lift manufacturer Schindler announced an adjustment plan (ERE) affecting 119 employees at its plant in Zaragoza (Aragon). According to the company, this adjustment plan is due to the decrease of elevators demand in southern Europe. However, according to trade unions Schindler is planning to offshore the production to Slovakia and to Switzerland. At the same time, the multinational plans to hire temporary workers to support the company's current production. Company and unions have now started the consultation period to negotiate the collective dismissal terms.
This measure will also affect the value chain of 60 companies that work for the multinational. Companies who will be affacted by the restructuring asked for clarification about their contractual agreements; the company replied that this discussion will take place when the ERE is completed.
