Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dover Fueling Solutions, a UK subsidiary of the US-based manufacturer, announced on 16 December 2019 that it will cut 179 jobs in Dundee, Scotland by Christmas. The affected staff were employed on temporary contracts through the agency EN Recruitment. However, many of the affected workers were shocked, as some of them have been working in the plant for extended periods.
A spokesperson for Dover refused to comment on the cuts and said that the business was stable. A representative of Unite the Union said that the company was trying to focus on its core, permanent employees.
The Dundee plant manufactures fuel pumps and it was acquired by Dover in 2016.
