Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German subsidiary of the Spanish car supplier Gestamp will cut 200 positions at its plant in Bielefeld, according to trade union IG Metall. The plant produces components for car bodies and chassis and is affected by the current transformations and difficulties in the car industry. Gestamp and IG Metall settled a collective agreement on the future of the plant some years ago, according to which no jobs shall be shed until 2021. However, the management and the union have recently started negotiations concerning contractual changes and job reductions. According to the union representatives, currently, the priority is to save the plant from closure. There is no certain redundancy plat yet, but the restructuring is expected to take place by late 2021.
