Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Belgian flooring company Unilin has announced the offshoring of their Vyškov based manufacturing to a production facility in Malaysia, causing 170 redundancies in the Czech Republic. The measurement is due to optimisation concerns. The company did not state the exact date of the production end in Vyškov, but the offshoring is expected to take place in 2020. The company has been operating in Vyškov since 2014, but the revenue decreased to CZK 497 million (€19.5 million as at 14 November 2019) in 2018 from CZK 539 million (€21 million as at 14 November 2019) in 2017.
The plant is part of the US-American flooring manufacturer Mohawk Industries. Globally, Unilin employs 5,000 people in 20 plants worldwide.
