Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Wire manufacturing company General Cable announced its plans to close two of its plants in Catalonia. The decision is planned to affect a total of 487 employees: 334 currently work in the Manlleu plant, while the remaining 153 currently work in the Montcada i Reixac plant.
Trade union CC.OO. maintains that the actual figure of redundant employees is expected to increase up to 600 employees, considering as well other plants in Catalonia. The trade union highlights also the alarming situation in Manlleu, where the plant of the company constitutes the biggest employer of the city. At the time of writing, there are negotiations on the terms of the closure between the company's management and employee representatives.
