Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Mahle, manufacturer of pistons for diesel engines, announced the closure of two of its Italian plants in the Piemonte region, Saluzzo (province of Cuneo) and La Loggia (province of Turin). The company will start a collective dismissal procedures for 452 workers (209 in Saluzzo and 243 in La Loggia). Production currently undertaken in the two plants will be transferred to Poland.
The company justified its decision with the contraction of the market for diesel engines, also connected with the emission scandals and with more general green-related pressures on automotive producers.
Negotiations with workers' representatives will start soon and the company announced its willingness to consider every possible alternative measure to minimise the potential impact on the employees.
