Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Engine and generator manufacturer Cummins has announced plans to close its site in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, which will make 130 staff redundant. The management of the company said that the closure is due to long-term unsustainability and due to challenging global economic conditions. An eventual maintenance of the establishment shall require GBP 3 million (€3,5 million as at 31 October 2019) investment, which is missing.
The Unite union required job transfers to company’s sites in England and called on the Scottish Government and North Lanarkshire Council to intervene in order to protect the jobs. The timetable for the site's closure will be determined through the consultation process, that has been started by the company.
Cummins has operated in Cumbernauld for 30 years.
