Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mill lining manufacturing company for the mining industry Metso plans to close its production unit in Ersmark, which is expected to result in the dismissal of 150 employees. Around 30 employees whose tasks are not connected to the production process will remain. No clear timeframe is announced for these restructuring processes.
The company maintains that the decision to dismiss employees in Ersmark is connected to the need to increase its competitiveness and its profitability by reviewing manufacturing capacity at the regional and global level. According to reports, employees from the site fear that the production process might be subject to relocation to the Trelleborg site and delocalisation to countries with cheaper labour costs, like India and South Africa.
Update 10/01/2020:In December 2019 the media reported that the number of dismissals increased from 150 to 155. The termination of production will take place in March 2020.
