Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German electric utilities company RWE has outlined plans to close the Aberthaw power station, located near Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. The site is the last remaining coal-fired power station in Wales. The plant employs 117 people, whose jobs are all at risk.
Originally the closure was planned for 2021, but the company commented that market conditions have resulted in the date being moved forward. Union Unite has asked for a meeting with management to understand the reasons for anticipating the closure. Environmental group Friends of the Earth welcomed the announcement, arguing that energy production should be based on a green strategy in the future.
