Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Internet sales giant Amazon has announced that it will create 2,000 new jobs across the UK in 2019. The locations and the nature of the roles have not been specified, though it is understood that some of the roles will be in the distribution centres and others will be in software development. The Chancellor of the Exchequer commented that the new jobs are a sign of confidence in the UK in the face of uncertain times. It has however been noted that the latest increases are well below previous years, most notably 2017, when 5,000 new jobs were created. Critics of the business continue to raise questions about the working conditions experienced by the staff in the warehousing operations.
