Description

French household equipment retailer Conforama (Group Steinhoff) has announced 1,900 job cuts in France in 2020, with the closure of 32 Conforama stores (on a total of 235) and 10 Maison Dépôt stores. The information was announced by the trade unions CGT and FO on 1 July, a day before the central works council meeting. The management confirmed the information on 2 July. Of the 32 stores that are due to close and currently employ 1,050 people, eight are located in the Ile-de-France region. Two of the three Parisian stores will close. There are also 600 job cuts in the 164 remaining Conforama stores, 124 at the head office and 26 in the after-sales service, while the 100 jobs in the Maison Dépôt stores will disappear. The first redundancy letters will be sent on 1 January 2020 and the plan will be finalised by the end of March 2020. The restructuring project should take the form of 'a social plan containing internal reemployment measures and voluntary departures' according to CGT.

Conforama employes 14,000 in the EU, including 9,200 in France.

Previous reorganisations took place at the retailer 288 job cuts (and 70 recruitments) announced in May 2012; 800 job cuts in 2009; and 1,500 job creations in 2006.
