Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
An Post is to close its mail centre in Cork, affecting 240 jobs. The semi-state company had indicated it would have to close on its provincial centres back as far as 2017, but it was not communicated to staff which centre it would be until 26 June. Around 240 staff are affected: 161 part-time and 79 full-time. Severance terms of six weeks' pay per year of service (with a cap of two years' earnings) will apply for those taking redundancy. There will also be re-deployment options for some staff. The workers' union, the CWU, has been in talks with An Post management about the closure and have agreed arrangements for how the mail centre will wind down, with an expected timeframe between September 2019 and March 2020. Closing the Cork site will bring expected savings of €11 million per year to An Post, as the site - the newest of its four provincial centres - was running at below 25% capacity. An Post is adapting to new trends in mailing, which has seen traditional mail reduce significantly, while parcels (largely due to online shopping) has become much more popular.
