Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Utilities company Southern Water has announced plans to cut 200 jobs in its customer services department. The company has 220 customer services staff at its two sites in Worthing and Falmer, meaning the vast majority of these jobs will be lost. The jobs will be outsourced to Capita, who will provide customer service for Southern Water from offices in Bangalore, India and Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
It is being reported that the transfer of work will begin from 1 August 2019; the statutory 45 day consultation process is already underway. A spokesperson for Unison noted that staff were angry and upset at the news.
