Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Gelsauga, a company providing support and security services to the Lithuanian railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai, is going to dismiss all 443 employees in Vilnius. Lietuvos Geležinkeliai has decided to separate security and support activities that were provided by Gelsauga. According to management, Gelsauga will be closed and the security activities will be transferred to the newly established company Saugos paslaugos. Lietuvos Geležinkeliai will buy support services from other companies that have won the tenders. Some of the current employees of Gelsauga will be transferred to the new company.
Gelsauga has been a subsidiary company of Lietuvos Geležinkeliai since 2007. It provided support services like facility management, maintenance of building systems, security and cleaning services. Gelsauga has already dismissed 555 employees at the beginning of 2019 (see previous case Gelsauga 2018 LT).
