Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Manufacturer Bosch has announced plans to cut 140 jobs from its garden power tools site in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Currently around 250 people are employed at the premises. A consultation with affected staff and their representatives is reportedly underway, the proposal being that jobs are moved to a site in Hungary. The timing of the changes will be determined as part of that consultation process. The company has pointed to its strategic business development as the reason for offshoring rather than the continued uncertainty around the UK's relationship with the EU. The Unite union has described the proposals as a 'body blow for the region'.
