Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of Auchan Retail France has announced to the different employee representative bodies the sale of 21 stores in France, which could lead to 723 job cuts. Management points out that the group's situation is 'very worrying'. Turnover fell by 1.3% in 2018 to €17 billion and the gross operating income fell by 44%.
The 21 stores for sale are: 1 hypermarket, at Villetaneuse (Seine-Saint-Denis) with its 188 employees; 13 supermarkets (Faulquemont, Tours, Esvres, Roanne, Marquette-les-Lille, Arras, Perpignan, Mulhouse, Rouen, Albert, Athis-Mons, Chevilly-la-Rue, Saint-Ouen-L'Aumone) with a total of 265 employees ; 4 chronodrive (Agen, Bayonne, Vannes, Caen) with 89 employees concerned, two 'Halles d'Auchan' (Meaux and Bobigny) with 150 employees, and finally the Auchandirect order preparation centre in Marseille (31 people).
In total, 723 employees are affected by these disposals, representing just under 1% of Auchan France Retail's 73,800 employees. The management is 'actively looking for buyers' for these sites and hopes that some sites will be taken over by the summer. Failing this, management will launch a redundancies plan to eliminate positions at sites that have not found a buyer.
