Description

Gorenje, the household appliance manufacturer (producer of refrigerators, kitchen stoves and complete kitchens, washing, drying and dish-washing machines and so on), will reduce its workforce by up to 270 workers. Gorenje is the largest Slovenian export company with affiliate firms in Check Republic, Serbia, Sweden, and the Netherlands where altogether about 10,000 people work. The Chinese corporation Hisense, which purchased Gorenje in 2018, is currently reorganising the company. In this context, on 25 April 2018, the management announced to the work council that the company was going to dismiss 1,720 workers, among which 1,450 will be reemployed while 270 will permanently lose their jobs. Dismissals mainly target middle and higher management. Gorenje now employs 4,212 workers while there were 6,643 employees before the acquisition. Trade unions refused to collaborate in collective dismissal procedures and announced the use of all means to stop lay-offs.

Hisense is otherwise planning to build a new production facility for TV sets in Velenje. For this purpose, some building permits have been already obtained.

Updated 6/6/2019: a firm announces that the total number of job losses will be lower, 104 instead of 270 previously announced.
