Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Codorníu, one of the main Spanish wine producers, announced a collective dismissal initially affecting 79 workers in several work centers in Catalonia (Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Raimat and Esplugues de Llobregat). The collective dismissal will affect both production and offices employees. In addition, the remaining 91 workers of Espluges work center will move to Sant Adurní. Codorníu justifies the redundancies as a strategic plan to improve efficiency and to focus on more relevant business areas. The company announced the restructuring nine months after the US group Carlyle bought most of Codorniu's shares and two years after the last collective dismissal in the company that affected 71 workers in 2017.
