Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sebe AS, an urban passenger transport company in Estonia, announced the need to dismiss 148 employees out of a total of 332 employees by 30 June 2019. Most of the employees (135) are bus drivers. Sebe has operated public bus service in Tartu city for the past 8 years under a procurement contract. As a result of the recent procurement procedure, however, as of 1 July 2019, the new operator of the service in Tartu will be AS GoBus for the next 10 years. The head of the management of Sebe is certain that the bus drivers will find a new job rather quickly, especially as GoBus will need at least the same number of bus drivers to operate the service.
