Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 25. February 2019, the German sugar producer Südzucker confirmed the closure of 2 factories in Germany, which will result in the loss of 150 jobs. Affected factories are in Brottewitz with 90 employees and in Warburg with 60 employees. Südzucker argues, that cuts are inevitable in order to adjust to high price fluctuations and to compensate for an expected decrease in sales between €100 and €200 million. A timeframe for the closure of both factories has yet to be announced.
The restructuring is also taking place at the French subsidiary Saint-Louis Sucre which has announced the closure of two of its four sugar factories in France from 2020, as well as a major reorganisation with 130 job cuts.
Südzucker has 18,500 employees worldwide.
