Barclays has announced plans to cut jobs from its operations in Leeds. The site, in the suburb of Beeston, is due for closure in November 2021 and currently employs around 1,100 staff who deal with mortgages, lending and complaints. Staff have now been informed that 280 jobs will be cut and of those, 115 positions will be relocated to Manchester, Liverpool and Sunderland. The redundancies are subject to the statutory period of consultation where alternatives to redundancy will be explored. However, reports suggest that the restructure is expected to be completed by the end of June 2019. Trade union Unite opposed the redundancies and called for the bank to reconsider.
Previous restructuring took place in 2018, when 171 jobs were lost.
