German car manufacturer BMW has announced plans to dismiss between 120 and 150 people at its largest engine factory in Steyr, Upper Austria. Starting from the end of February 2019 production will be reduced from three to two shifts, which causes the lay-off of up to 150 temporary agency workers at the plant. One of the affected temporary work agencies has already reported 54 dismissals to the public employment service as a result. The restructuring is due to declining demand for diesel passenger cars. The company intends to keep as many of the employees as possible through an internal re-organisation of the work load.
Previous restructuring took place in 2017, when 170 jobs were created.
