Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Aviko, a company of the Dutch Royal Cayun Group and one of the four largest potatoe processors worldwide, decided to close the Amberg-based plant of Dolli, a manufacturer of regional potatoes specialities, by 31 December. Aviko had increased ownership of AMberg Dolli from 60% to 100% at the beginning of 2018 saying it will restructure and modernise the plant. However, according to the company, since then various attempts to improve the profitability of the operation have failed. The plant had worked with loss, with no prospect of improvement. The announcement of the closure came as a surprise. About 150 employees are expected to lose their jobs. Some employees will be offered alternative jobs at the Aviko plant in Rain am Lech, also in Bavaria.
