Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Vodafone España, the Spanish subsidiary of the British multinational telecommunications conglomerate, has presented a collective dismissal plan to workers’ representatives that will affect up to 1,200 employees or 25% of the workforce, mainly in the area of systems and commercial. The company stated that the decision was made due to economic causes and mainly due to the massive loss of customers during 2018.
The union UGT has rejected the plan, which considers unnecessary and inadequate, and emphasised that the responsibility of the situation lies with the managers, who have made incorrect strategic decisions, and not the staff. The operator implemented a collective dismissal plan in September 2015, agreed with the largest unions in the company UGT and STC, which involved the dismissal of 1,059 workers, due to the acquisition of Ono in 2014.
Update 22/02/2019
Vodafone has submitted its final collective layoff proposal implying 1,000 redundancies. The three unions representing the company's workers (UGT, CCOO and STC) have decided to accept the proposal. This plan reduces the dismissals initially proposed and provides compensation of 50 days per year worked, with a maximum of 33 monthly payments.
