Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The call centre company Transcom has implemented a collective dismissal plan, affecting 147 workers. The figure has significantly decreased from the original 200 job cuts, which were planned at the beginning of the negotiations. The company justified the dismissals on economic reasons, due to the termination in July 2018 of the contract for the provision of services with Orange and the reduction in revenues in recent months.
The representatives of the workers called during September and October 2018 strikes and demonstrations against the dismissals. The works council proposed to the company solutions that would allow the maintenance of full employment in the company by proving that it had sufficient capacity to relocate workers in other services.
A previous restructuring took place in April 2017, when 315 jobs were lost.
