Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Essar Oil UK has announced that it is to cease production in two chemical units at its oil refinery in Ellesmere Port, leading to the loss of 180 jobs. The site is owned by oil company Shell, though it is managed and run by Essar Oil under a management agreement. The chemical units were damaged by fire in August 2018 and it has been decided by Shell that it is not economically viable to repair or replace them. A spokesperson for the local council pledged to support the affected workers in their search for new employment. The timeframe for the job losses has not been confirmed.
