Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mainetti, a company based in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, which manufactures coat hangers, as well as other plastic products, has announced plans to cut 50 jobs. Around 360 people are employed at the firm in Jedburgh. The company has said that the demand for coat hangers has reduced, due to recycling and problems facing high street retail. Added to this, production costs have increased. The firm is hoping to achieve the reductions through voluntary means. The local MP commented that the job losses were 'disappointing' but also pointed to the fact that more than 300 jobs would remain in the town. The time frame for the job losses has not yet been reported.
