Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a company specialised in the design and production of high-pressure gas cylinders, announced the closure of its site in Gerzat (Puy-de-Dôme) for June 2019. The 136 employees will lose their jobs. The management explains that it faces 'a degraded economic environment', which forces it to 'simplify its industrial tool by reorganizing its activity' and 'concentrating this activity within the factories of Nottingham (United Kingdom) and of Riverside (United States) in order to remain competitive'. Production should cease in June 2019 and the site, as a whole, will close at the end of 2019.
According to employees, the local management was not aware of the group's decision to close the French site. Still according to the employees, the machinery could go to Poland, which is in contrast with the strategy stated by the group. The mayor of the city learned about the closure by the press. Negotiations will be open to elaborate an Employment safeguard plan.
