Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On October 31, 2018, the chemical company Miteni announced the start of the collective dismissal procedure for all the 121 workers employed at the Trissin plant, in the province of Vicenza (Veneto region).
Miteni was investigated for the pollution of groundwater from perfluoroalkyl substances (Pfas). According to the company's management, the financial costs deriving from the investigations had an important impact on the budget and made it difficult the access to credit from local banks, "worried about the company's reputation". On October 26, 2018, the management decided to declare bankruptcy and to close the seat, suspending production activities by the end of the year.
Due to the unexpected decision, workers and trade unions declared a strike.
