Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On October, 30, 2018, the private security company KSM Security started the dismissal procedures for 134 workers employed in different cities in Sicily (53 in Palermo, 15 in Messina, 14 in Trapani, 33 in Caltanissetta and 19 in Agrigento).
The announcement was given by the general secretary of the sectoral trade union Fisascat-Cisl, which received the communication foreseen by the law on collective dismissals. The trade unionist deemed the company's decision 'unacceptable', especially considering the over 200 dismissals carried out by KSM Security one year ago. According to the Fisascat-Cisl secretary general, this decision might be the prelude of an unlucky future for the company, which should rather focus on long-term solutions.
