Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Qui group, Italian provider of food vouchers with headquarters in Genoa, has announced the dismissal of 187 workers.
On 6 September, the company was declared bankrupt. On 21 September, the receiver did not grant the possibility to operate under a provisional licence. Following a meeting at the Ministry of Economic Development, the company sent dismissal letters to its 187 workers (161 of whom employed in Genoa).
The trade unions expressed their concern about the occupational impact of the closure. Over 1,000 workers (700 in Genova) in related businesses are at risk of losing their job. Trade unions called for ad-hoc social shock absorbers and the possibility to continue operations while looking for a new investor.
