Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Virgin Media has announced that it will close its customer service centre in Swansea, making 772 employees redundant by July 2019. The plan was first announced in May and confirmed on 2nd August.
The company has said that 470 customer operations roles from Swansea will transfer to subcontractors or Virgin’s site near Manchester.
The CEO of the company said that the restructuring is part of a three-year plan to acquire new sites and invest in existing ones elsewhere in the UK.
The leader of Swansea Council said they will do everything to help affected workers and criticised Virgin Media: “We hope Virgin Media will work with us because the company owes the people of Swansea a debt.”
