The UK telecoms giant BT has announced to cut 13,000 jobs over three years, about 12% of its workforce. At the same time, the group will hire about 6,000 employees to support network deployment and customer service. The net job losses will reach 7,000 at the end of the restructuring programme. Two third of the job cuts will affect the UK and one third will impact BT's Global Services division outside the UK. The British trade union Prospect highlighted it had been working closely with BT on looking at the impact of organisational changes, but it estimates the number of job cuts sounded 'unrealistic'. BT explained it has to cope with changes in the telecom market.
