Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Fashion retailer Bonmarche is cutting 140 jobs across its stores. The cuts are part of a cost-cutting initiative and are subject to the statutory period of consultation. The positions, which have been earmarked for redundancy, are understood to be store assistant roles. Alongside the proposals to cut jobs, the company is also planning to introduce mobility clauses to staff contracts, meaning that employees can be asked to travel to different stores within a 25 mile radius in order to cover staff shortages. Indications are that there will be some resistance to these new terms. The time frame for the implementation of these changes has not been revealed.
