Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, which manufactures cookers and fridges for brand names such as Stoves, Lec and Britannia, has announced that it is to cut 300 jobs. The business is based on Merseyside with a distribution centre in Stoke on Trent and employs 1,000 permanent staff. A company statement said that the cuts were necessary to ensure that the business is viable for the future. The statutory consultation period will now apply to the plans, though the company has said that it expects redundancies to begin from August 2018.
