Description
The car manufacturer Opel has announced it will cut approximately 3,600 jobs in Germany within the next 2 years. In Rüsselsheim 2,700 of 7,700 jobs will be cut and in Eisenach 900 of 1,800. This is a shock for most employees as the new French owner PSA had agreed to waive operational terminations until 2020. However, PSA is pressuring Opel to reduce its costs drastically. In December 2017, Opel presented PSA with various job reduction programmes (e.g. early retirement programmes and voluntary compensations), but no agreement was reached. PSA, Opel, the works’ council and the German Metalworkers’ Union are continuing negotiations in order to find a long-term solution.
