Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Grupo Zeta, a Catalan publisher business group, has proposed a layoff to dismiss 177 employees from the four companies that edit, manage, market and deliver El Periódico de Catalunya: 85 jobs in editorial department, 55 in administration areas, 19 in commercial positions and 18 more in delivery and subscriptions positions.
The reasons for the announced dismissals are economic, productive and organisational in order to adapt the companies of the group to the new business model in newspapers. To protest against the company's position, and to demand social measures to alleviate the effects of the dismissals, the workers committee has called a strike of eight days from March 23 to April 6.
