Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In preparation for the Brexit, the Dutch Customs Agency, part of the Tax and Customs Administration, has announced it is recruiting between 750 and 930 new customs officials as soon as possible, to be concentrated in the port of Rotterdam and possibly new customs locations along the Dutch coast. The new officials will be handling the export controls necessitated by Brexit, as the number of export customs declarations are expected to increase by about a third, and are to minimise the effects of Brexit felt by companies trading with the UK. The recruitment effort seems to have been made public in response to concerns voiced by an organisation representing businesses in the Rotterdam port area. A remaining concern admitted by the Dutch government is the necessity to train all new officials, an issue which may be addressed by implementing a short-track training programme.
