Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German brewery Warsteiner announced it will cut up to 240 jobs over the next 2 to 3 years. About 80 jobs will disappear at the company's headquarters in Warstein. The other 160 jobs will be spread over Warsteiner’s 20 operative business units within Germany, such as Warsteiner International and Distribution. Although the brewery will spread the job reduction measures over a wider timeframe, it expects all major decisions to be made within 1 year. At the same time, Warsteiner announced it will invest €250 million over the next five years in updating and modernising its production process.
Management and employee representatives will start negotiations shortly. They will try to avoid operative terminations but at this stage cannot rule anything out.
As of February 2018, Warsteiner has 1,500 employees in Germany.
