Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Energy company E.On has announced plans to close its call centre in Wath Upon Dearne, South Yorkshire, resulting in the loss of 250 jobs. Consultation with trade unions will begin shortly. The consultation is expected to confirm the number of job losses, set out any plans for redeployment of staff and confirm the date on which the site will close.
The local Member of Parliament for South Yorkshire said that the job losses would have a large effect on the local economy. He stated that he hoped that E.On would agree to retrain or redeploy as many staff as possible, and that if there were no other options, that the redundancy package is as generous as possible.
