Description
Nyrstar, a multinational company specialised in mining activities and metal trade has announced the dismissal of approximately 121 employees at their zinc smelting facility in Balen. On the other hand 10-12 new posts will be created so that the net job loss envisaged is 110. In total 90 blue collar and 20 white collar workers are facing dismissal. The main motive for the restructuring operation is an effort by the company to reduce the debts they accumulated throughout the years. It is estimated approximately 30 jobs at suppliers could be affected as well as facilities in other countries. Trade union representatives at the plant do not exclude the possibility of industrial action.
