Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Dutch office furniture manufacturer, Ahrend, has announced it will close its production site in Zwanenburg, North Netherlands, which will result in the loss of between 89 and 134 jobs. In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the company has seen its revenue strongly decrease. Furthermore, new and flexible ways of working have decreased demand for the 'standard' workplace solutions that Ahrend manufactures. Since 2013, the company has focused on internal restructuring to reduce costs.
Ahrend has a total of 5 sites across the Netherlands, employing approximately 1,025 workers as of April 2016.
