Description
Swindon Borough Council has announced plans to cut 420 jobs from its total staff of 2,800 as it bids to save costs. The council says it needs to reduce costs by 30 million GBP over the next two and a half years. The consultation with trade unions is due to start at the beginning of 2018. The council has said that redundancies will be a last resort, though commentators have questioned whether this approach seems likely, given the fact that cuts are to be applied across all departments. A spokesperson for the council has confirmed that in the event of redundancies, the employer will first explore the voluntary route.
