Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Qualytel which belongs to the group Arvato-Berstelmann and is specialised in the provision of telemarketing services, has announced its intention to close its establishment in Sevilla. This will imply the dismissal of the 192 workers currently employed. 80% of the workers are women. The company state that the measure is due to economic losses. However, the trade unions reject this motivation and argue that the company is still recording profits, as it has very relevant clients such as Renault, Seur or Gas Natural. A proposal has presented in the regional parliament of Andalusia demanding the government to mediate in the conflict with a view to stop the dismissals. It has also demanded the Labour Inspectorate to draft a report about the legal feasibility of the company to present a dismissal due to economic causes.
