Description
Caterpillar has announced that it will cease operations at its site of Dyersburg (Tennessee) and at its facility in Arras (France). Both sites assemble transmissions used in construction and mining machines. The production of these facilities would be consolidated into existing Caterpillar facilities. According to the management, this move would enable the company to be more cost competitive for these components, improve response time, reduce excess floor space and better utilise its manufacturing assets. This reorganisation will impact 67 positions in Arras and about 85 positions in Dyersburg. The reorganisation is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2017 and to be completed by the end of 2018.
There is no information about measures that could be adopted to mitigate the social impact. The French site should close at the end of the first quarter of 2018 and its activities will be transferred to Brazil and Northern Ireland. The group has seen its global turnover decreasing from $66 to $38 billion between 2012 and 2016. In 2014, Caterpillar received approximately €500,000 of public subsidies from different local authorities to maintain and develop the Arras site.
