Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Major supermarket Asda has announced plans to restructure employment at 18 underperforming stores. Reports suggest that 3,257 jobs have been placed into consultation, though the actual number of job losses is predicted to be somewhat lower than this figure, though still somewhere in the hundreds. In addition to job losses, it is being suggested that jobs may be saved by reducing the number of hours of work available to staff. Reports from one source also suggest that Asda is considering the staffing levels in a further 59 stores, though these plans remain at the informal stage. The decision of Asda to look at staffing levels follows widespread volatility in the supermarket sector with a number of competitors undertaking similar restructuring measures.
