Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Edesa, specialised in the manufacture of domestic appliances and located in the Basque Country, aims to implement an employment adjustment plan affecting 220 workers. The plan also foresees the closure of the manufacturing plant located in Garagartza (Arrasate, Gipuzkoa). The Working Committee has rejected the employment adjustment plant. It has presented a plan with alternative proposals aiming to avoid or minimise the measure. The company has responded that it will analyse the proposal during the next week. Edesa is currently under a pre-insolvency procedure.
Update 14-09-2017
The first meeting between management and working committee has taken place, the company confirms that it aims to keep the business. However, it has reiterated that, to this aim, it needs to dismiss 167 workers and close the plant located in Garagartza. The working committee, whom would like to avoid dismissals, has informed the press that the meeting didn't bring to an agreement.
