Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Car parts manufacturer International Automotive Components (IAC) has announced that it is to cut 130 jobs from its site in Halewood, Merseyside. The company supplies leather interiors for Jaguar Land Rover. The decision comes after workers rejected options of pay freezes or pay cuts by IAC management. The work will now be carried out at IAC's other site in Birmingham, where the work can be done more cheaply. Labour costs are one of the reasons why the unit price is cheaper in the midlands. There is no information available as to when the 130 job losses will take effect.
